Getting more value from mangoes:
Can growers and collectors organise better
to help each other?
The mango is a tropical fruit with immense potential. With newer, tastier, and exotic flavoured varieties coming into the mix, Sri Lankan mangoes can fetch premium prices in competitive markets. Though the demand for quality mangoes is increasing in both developing and developed countries, farmers often miss out on the share of benefits.
In Sri Lanka, mangoes come mainly from traditional home gardens scattered around the country and a growing number of new commercially oriented farms in key mango growing areas – mainly in Sri Lanka’s dry zone.
